POSITION SUMMARY
The Technical Director is responsible for leading the Scenic Department through all phases of design, fabrication, and installation of scenic elements for all productions produced by Milwaukee Rep. The TD is part of a collaborative team of artists and technicians dedicated to achieving the highest production values possible based on the available resources. Direct reports to the TD include: Associate TD, Asst. TD, Assistant Stagehand, as well as IATSE Crew - Deck Supervisor, Lead Carpenter, and Carpenters (2).
Major Duties and Responsibilities Include:
1. Leadership and Supervision
- Cultivate a collaborative, and inclusive culture in the Scenic Department by building culturally competent and generative relationships among staff, and immediately addressing instances of harmful language or behavior
- Attend and run department meetings
- Work closely with Charge Scenic Artist to plan shared work
- Maintain a safe and healthy work environment
2. Designer Support and Collaboration:
- Communicate with Designers to support and execute designs with a high artistic standard within available resources of time, labor, materials, and budget
- Ensure design changes are communicated to production team members
- Foster a design process that includes accessibility and cultural competency
- Communicate with Stage Manager, other Production Area Heads, and Designer on rehearsal and tech notes
3. Scenic Construction/Install/Tech Process:
- Estimate materials and labor costs from Designer's preliminary drawings; refine estimates with final drawings to ensure efficiency, cost-effectiveness and safety, while maintaining the design vision
- Create CAD construction drawings from Designer's plates
- Source materials in a timely, resource-efficient way, prioritizing local, diverse and socially responsible vendors
- Work with all production departments to create build, load-in and strike schedules
- Manage construction, load in, installation, tech rehearsal and strike of all scenic elements
4. Administration:
- Maintain updated and accurate theatre plans
- Maintain timely and up to date scenic expense tracking
- Collaborate in policy setting, season planning, script reading and budgeting
- Uphold Milwaukee Rep policies and procedures
- Additional duties as required including participation in education, outreach, and fundraising events
SCHEDULE
The bulk of the work hours will happen during regular business hours, with nights and weekends during technical rehearsals as the production schedule requires. The ideal start date is January 2024, we are willing to negotiate for the right candidate.
Our production season typically runs August through May each season.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION
Technical Knowledge and Experience:
- Ability to lead and manage a team
- Ability to draft with AutoCAD or other CAD programs
- Ability to analyze scripts, designs, and technical drawings to summarize, organize and apply to planning and budgeting
- Ability to establish and maintain clear and accurate communication in person, via email, phone, Zoom or by other means
- Knowledge of both traditional and non-traditional scenic construction techniques and materials
- Knowledge of motion control construction and operation, and use of Creative Connors automation control
- Knowledge of stage rigging techniques
- Ability to estimate material and labor costs as well as develop and adhere to schedules
- Familiarity with IATSE, USA, AEA and other union agreements
